Pelitoiminnan tutkimussäätiön tutkimusjohtaja, professori Pauliina Raento vastaa Säätiön tieteellisestä toiminnasta. Hän aloitti tehtävässään syyskuussa 2008.

Pelitoiminnan tutkimussäätiön tutkimusjohtaja Pauliina Raento on helsinkiläinen kulttuurimaantieteilijä. Hän väitteli tohtoriksi Nevadan yliopistossa Renossa vuonna 1996. Elämä kuuluisassa pelikaupungissa herätti kiinnostuksen rahapelaamisen tutkimiseen, erityisesti yhdysvaltalaiseen kasinoteollisuuteen. Raennon rahapeliaiheiset tutkimukset keskittyvät Las Vegasin tematisoituun maisemaan ja kasinoteollisuuden paikallis- ja aluetaloudellisiin vaikutuksiin Yhdysvaltain lännen pikkukaupungeissa. Viime vuosina hän on tutkinut myös suomalaista rahapelikulttuuria. Raennon laajaan kansainväliseen kokemukseen sisältyy opetus- ja tutkimustyötä Yhdysvaltain lisäksi Espanjassa, Skotlannissa ja Kuubassa.

Raento on virkavapaalla professuuristaan Helsingin yliopistossa. Hän on Elsevierin kustantaman Political Geography -lehden toimittaja ja Suomen tiedekustantajien liiton hallituksen puheenjohtaja. Raennon erikoisaloja ovat poliittinen ja kulttuurinen maantiede sekä vapaa-aikaan ja matkailuun liittyvien teemojen maantieteellinen tutkimus. Hänen työssään korostuvat monitieteisyys sekä visuaaliset ja maantieteelliset kenttätyömenetelmät.
